How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product defiantly represents particular stereotypical social groups. My primary target audience was younger males although I was also aiming it at younger females as well. There was ways I could do this so it could appeal to a stereotypical mainstream, younger male, chart music fan. I had to think about what the type of person was demographically and psychographically. My magazine represents young males who are deemed mainstream (followers of the crowd, likes certain music because everybody else likes it) I also aimed it at trendy or fashionable males hence why I used a picture of someone with stylish clothes on and a modern hair style. Also the colours are not really seen as being girl colours, as I used black and white throughout the whole magazine and black is seen as a fairly stereotypical manly colour so I picked my colour scheme to suite my target audience. My style of writing was also written so it would appeal to my target audience, stereotypical teenage boys don't read a lot so I would have to make my article interesting and in a style where they would want to read on. I used a slightly formal however chatty style which suites the mainstream chart music listeners very closely. I had to base my magazine content and looks on stereotypes as everyone is in fact different however people have different common interests. I also left out some things that I thought stereotypical teenage boys wouldn't want to see in a music magazine such as in the fashion sections it would be mainly boys clothes and the tag line get the latest styles/ trends which are normally appeals to teenage boys as they want the latest clothes etc. I had to think long and hard as my whole magazine would be aimed to please my target audience so every detail would need to be looked at. In my magazine I have reinforced stereotypes I thought this would be the best thing to do as my target audience isn't known for challenging stereotypes they are 'mainstream' and follow what everyone else likes if they challenged the stereotype they would lose their social status.

As you can see from the two pictures they are very similar, their posture is pretty much the same looking at the camera with their arm pointing straight down. Although my photo (top one) is at a higher angle than the other picture they are still both person pictures. Although the picture on the right is breaking the typical stereotype of a teenage male by smiling with his hands out of his pockets my photo for my double page spread is backing up the stereotype for a teenage male. My model isn't smiling and his hands are inside his pockets this suggests he is quite lazy and so backs up the stereotype, the way he is standing and the way he has his hands in his pockets could also suggest that he is quite thuggish. They look like they would be used in a double page spread as they would be talking about personal life etc also both shots are medium shots which again makes them even more similar. The style of the 2 guys in also alike, normal jeans with a white shirt, very simple however deemed very stylish. The lighting that I used for my photo was motivated I used a high powered studio light to light up my model. The bottom photo also looks like is has done this even though it looks like it is a very light set like a beach or something. The bottom picture however is a lot lighter than my photo. The one thing that is different about these photos is the expression on both the models faces. On my photo there is a slight smile being pulled and on the other photo a whole smile is being pulled and even though they are different expressions they are still very alike. One of the main things that are alike in these pictures is the hairstyles, I don't really need to explain as you can see the hair styles are exactly the same. However that's just the look of the photos there are also the demographics and psychographics of the photo. They look the same age around 18-19 years old both are male and they look like they are from the a middle class family. Both of the guys  look like mainstreamers which is perfect as this is what I wanted for my magazine.

  1. 'Defiantly' or 'definitely'?
    '...which are normally appeals to..."?

In the photo comparison I can see lots of differences which affect the representation. Eg your model is unsmiling, has hands in pockets etc. Nevertheless I think you can make a case that both depart from some aspects of stereotypical representations of teen males - but you have to write a bit more fully about how yours does this. Eg discuss, say, the typical representations of teen males more explicity (thuggish, violent, lazy etc).

  2. Oh and you HAVE to change the font or the colour as this is very hard on the eye to read. You don't want the examiner to be irritated in that way!
